Jumper Cables

To jump-start a vehicle, you will need a set of jumper cables and another vehicle with a working battery.

Jumper Cable Steps:

  1. Park the two vehicles close together, but not touching.
  2. Turn off both engines and engage the parking brakes.
  3. Pop the hoods of both vehicles and locate the batteries.
  4. Connect the red jumper cable clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
  5. Connect the other red jumper cable clamp to the positive terminal of the working battery.
  6. Connect the black jumper cable clamp to the negative terminal of the working battery.
  7. Connect the other black jumper cable clamp to an unpainted metal surface of the dead car, such as the engine block or frame.
  8. Start the engine of the working vehicle and let it run for a few minutes.
  9. Try to start the engine of the dead vehicle. If it doesn’t start, let the working vehicle run for another few minutes and try again.
  10. Once the dead vehicle starts, disconnect the jumper cables in reverse order.
  11. Let the dead vehicle run for at least 20 minutes to recharge the battery.

If you have any doubts or concerns about jump-starting a vehicle, it is best to call a roadside assistance service.

Battery Jump-Starter

To use a battery jump-starter, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the car and remove the keys from the ignition.
  2. Connect the red clamp of the jump starter to the positive terminal of the car battery.
  3. Connect the black clamp of the jump-starter to a good ground, such as a metal part of the engine block.
  4. Turn on the jump-starter.
  5. Start the car engine.
  6. Once the car engine has started, disconnect the jump-starter in reverse order.

Here are some additional tips for using a battery jump-starter:

  • Make sure that the jump-starter is fully charged before using it.
  • Make sure that the jumper cables are properly connected to the battery terminals and the ground.
  • Do not start the car engine if the jump-starter is not turned on.
  • Do not disconnect the jump starter while the car engine is running.
  • If the car engine does not start after a few attempts, let the jump-starter rest for a few minutes and then try again.

If you are having trouble starting your car even with a battery jump-starter, you may need to replace the battery.

Safety Tips

  • Always wear safety glasses when jump-starting a vehicle.
  • Be careful not to touch the positive and negative terminals of the batteries together. This can create a spark that could ignite hydrogen gas, which is produced by batteries.
  • Do not smoke or use any other open flame near the batteries.
  • If the dead battery is leaking, do not jump-start the vehicle.

If you are unsure about how to use a battery jump starter, please consult a qualified mechanic.
